The Root Chakra and Mediumship: Belonging, Humiliation, and Dignity

The Root Chakra and Mediumship: Belonging, Humiliation, and Dignity

This is the first in a three part series on the lower chakras and what they ask us to heal on the path to becoming a clear channel. I taught this as part of a mini lesson series inside Spirit School and I am bringing it here because I think it belongs in the world.

The root chakra is where we start. Not because it is the least important but because everything else we build in mediumship, confidence, trust, service, rests on this foundation.

Belonging: The Wound That Brings Most of Us Here

One of the first things the root chakra asks us to look at is belonging, and specifically the lack of it.

Most people drawn to this path know exactly what I mean. This is an uncommon path. You can spend years feeling like the odd one out, in your family, in your community, in spiritual spaces that do not quite fit either.

For me it was not rupture so much as being the first. First to graduate. First to leave Vancouver. First to travel. First entrepreneur. First to safely claim my indigeneity without the fear of what that might cost me. First, first, first. And all of that firstness creates a quiet belief that you do not belong anywhere.

I still run into it. When the CRA audited me I did not fit a single tick box. When I applied to the bespoke market I had to list myself under homewares. I fit no category that already exists.

What I learned is that belonging is not something you find. It is something you build inside yourself first. Can you create a sense of belonging within your own skin, within your own essence, before you find it anywhere else? That is the root chakra work.

Humiliation: The Wound That Keeps Developing Mediums Hidden

The second thing that comes up at the root chakra, especially for developing mediums, is humiliation. And this one is big.

Think about what mediumship actually asks of you. You open your awareness, you have the audacity to say what you think you see, feel, know, sense. And then you need validation to confirm it. That is a vulnerable loop. And if you carry a wound around failing in front of others, that loop can keep you hidden for years.

I watched friends start developing around the same time I did. They jumped on Instagram right away, developing in public, comfortable being seen before they were polished. I could not do it. I needed to know what I was doing before I went out there. That was my path and it was the right path for me, but if I am honest, a lot of it was a wound around humiliation.

The moment I understood this was a story from before mediumship. Someone asked me to speak to 30 colleagues about my quitting smoking journey. I was not nervous. I am not shy. I walked in confident. And then the world went black. When I came back my friend Tana was looking at me asking if I was okay and I genuinely did not know where I was or why everyone was staring at me.

The antidote I found was not confidence. It was dignity.

Dignity is the word that balances humiliation. When I ask myself how do I restore balance right now, how do I meet this moment with dignity, something shifts. Dignity does not require you to be perfect. It just requires you to show up with integrity in your own skin.

Spirit actually gave me a reference for dignity that I still use in readings today. A hand placed over a hand. The message that comes with it is almost always the same: thank you for allowing me to pass with dignity. Thank you for letting me stay home.

The only prerequisite to mediumship is a life well lived. Because spirit will use everything you have consumed, everything you have experienced, to reach the person sitting across from you. Dignity is one of those things.

Inherited Beliefs: What Did Your Lineage Tell You About This Work?

The third root chakra theme is inherited beliefs.

Beliefs are deeply root chakra. They are woven into us through family, culture, land, lineage, long before we have the brain development to question them.

Around age 25 our frontal cortex fully develops. This is where real choice and consequence come online. And this is often when people on this path start asking: what do I actually believe versus what was handed to me?

Your assignment if this is landing for you: sit with this question. What does your culture say about mediumship? What does your family lineage say about spirit communication? What did you absorb about this work before you ever consciously chose it?

We are not just clearing our own beliefs. We are clearing lineage. And that is deeply, profoundly root chakra work.

This is part one of three. The sacral chakra series covers emotional awareness, energetic boundaries, and learning to ask the question that changes everything: is this mine?
