When Spirit Sings: A Conversation with Debbie Squizzero, the Singing Medium
There are conversations that stay with you. This was one of them.
I've known Deb Squizzero for almost ten years. We met in a similar development community back when we were both still figuring out what this path was going to ask of us, and we've watched each other build our practices, leave our careers, survive our health crises, and step into the work we were clearly always meant to do. So when I finally had her in the Spirit School Collective for a live conversation, it felt less like an interview and more like two old friends finally sitting down to talk shop.
And the shop we talked? Music.
Deb is known as the Singing Medium, and the name is not a gimmick. She genuinely receives messages through song. Songs pop into her right ear mid-reading. Wedding songs, funeral songs, Tina Turner. She sang Chaka Khan to a woman whose dad was coming through. She sang Andy Grammar's "Keep Your Head Up" to people who were barely keeping theirs above water.
This episode had my community lighting up the chat from the moment we started, and I think you'll understand why once you listen.
How Spirit Uses Music in Readings
Deb has been receiving messages through song since she was learning tarot, hearing lyrics and melodies that had nothing to do with the cards but everything to do with the person sitting across from her. Here's what we covered:
Spirit chooses songs with surgical precision: wedding songs, funeral songs, obscure nineties tracks that only one person in the room would recognize
The intelligence is in the specificity , of all the millions of songs that exist, the right one lands at the exact right moment
Music works as a bridge because grief is universal, music is universal, and it bypasses the thinking mind entirely
If you're waking up with a song stuck in your head, it might not be a coincidence, your loved ones reach you in ways that are easily recognizable to you
What Forced Us Both Off Our Old Path
Deb taught kindergarten and first grade special education for 23 years before spirit pushed her out. I left my career at the First Nations Health Authority under similar circumstances. We talked about what that actually looked like:
Both of us didn't leave , we got pushed out through health crises we couldn't ignore
The message from spirit is always loving and repeating, even when it's hard to hear
What looked like the scariest thing became the thing that made everything else possible
Neither of us ended up where we expected -- both of us ended up somewhere better
